Store-App Questions, Answered
The questions store operators actually ask, answered plainly and without an agenda. Legal questions get facts, not advice — always check your own jurisdiction.
Store-app FAQ
Which apps does a new store actually need?
Fewer than the app store suggests. A workable first loadout is a review app (free tiers cover a new catalog), an email platform with an abandoned-cart flow (also free at small list sizes), and nothing else until a real gap appears. The platform itself already handles pages, basic analytics, and checkout. Add a page builder when paid traffic needs dedicated landing pages, and a helpdesk when support volume outgrows a shared inbox — not before.
Klaviyo or Omnisend — which should I pick?
Both are mature email + SMS platforms with real free tiers. Omnisend is the SMB value pick: every feature is available at every tier and the entry price is lower, so small lists get the whole toolkit cheaply. Klaviyo is the depth pick: stronger segmentation, predictive analytics, and the largest ecosystem, priced by contact count. The honest tiebreaker is list size and how much of the depth you will actually use — trial both against your real list before committing.
Are free app tiers good enough to start?
Usually, yes. The free tiers in email (up to a few hundred contacts), reviews (unlimited requests on some apps), analytics, and dropshipping are genuinely usable, not crippleware — vendors use them to grow with you. Their limits are contact counts, page slots, or automation caps. The right moment to pay is when a specific limit blocks revenue you can name, not when an upgrade banner appears.
Do too many apps slow my store down?
They can. Many apps inject scripts into every page, and each one adds load time — which costs conversion. Two habits keep it in check: audit the stack quarterly and uninstall anything you have not opened in a month (uninstall fully, since some apps leave code behind), and prefer apps that load only where they are used. If a page builder or review widget is on a money page, test the page speed before and after installing.
When is it time for a real helpdesk app?
When support volume makes a shared email inbox lossy — typically as orders climb into a steady daily flow and "where is my order" tickets repeat. A helpdesk earns its fee by putting order data next to every conversation, templating the repetitive answers, and pulling chat and social messages into one queue. Before that point, a disciplined inbox plus saved replies is honestly enough.
Do photo reviews matter, or is any review app fine?
Reviews of any kind beat none — the presence of real ratings is the biggest jump. Photo and video reviews matter most where the product is visual: apparel, home goods, beauty, anything bought on look and feel. If that is your catalog, a visual-first app earns its subscription. If your product is functional or spec-driven, a budget app with unlimited requests covers the job, and the money is better spent elsewhere.
Is dropshipping still viable, and do US/EU suppliers matter?
The model still works, but the easy version does not: long shipping times and commodity products get punished by ad costs and refund rates. What aggregated operator reports consistently show is that domestic (US/EU) suppliers — faster delivery at a higher unit cost — convert better, refund less, and build repeat business. Treat dropshipping as product-market testing with real margins math, not as a passive-income shortcut.
What are the consent rules before I send marketing SMS?
In the US, marketing texts require express written consent under the TCPA — a shopper must actively opt in (a pre-checked box does not count), you must honor opt-outs immediately, and quiet-hours rules apply. Reputable SMS platforms build compliant capture and suppression in, but the legal responsibility is the store’s. This is general information, not legal advice; confirm the current rules for the regions you sell into before turning SMS on.
